During this course you’ll use relevant tourism case study examples from Asia and around the world to critically examine a range of contemporary issues in cultural and heritage site tourism management.

First you’ll get clear on the definitions and concepts involved so that you understand the difference between cultural tourism and heritage tourism.

Then you’ll build interdisciplinary knowledge on concepts that affect them, such as power, globalisation, authenticity, commodification, and representation.

By introducing you to current debates within heritage tourism studies, this course helps you explore how to overcome these challenges with a sustainable approach to tourism management and destination development.

Develop the professional skills needed for managing heritage and cultural tourism resources

On this course, you’ll cover all aspects of managing World Heritage Sites, including promotion, conservation and safeguarding.

Discover more about the legal frameworks, processes, and practices used to identify and manage these sites and learn about the unique role of emotion in heritage tourism.

By the end of this course you’ll have a solid understanding of the challenges and opportunities of managing heritage and cultural tourism resources. You’ll also know how to best promote and conserve World Heritage Sites in line with sustainable tourism principles.

Skip to 0 minutes and 19 seconds Hi, everyone. Cultural tourism is one of the oldest forms of travel. It still continues to be a mainstay of the tourism industry in most parts of the world. This course mainly focuses on Cultural Heritage Tourism which is a branch of cultural tourism oriented towards the cultural heritage of the location where tourism is occurring. This course will take the form of public lectures by myself and a team of international leading cultural heritage experts.

  • Week 1

    Cultural Tourism: Definitions and Concepts

    • Introduction course outline and UNESCO World Heritage Program

      In this section, Dr. Rouran Zhang will introduce the outline of Culture and Tourism course and a whole context of UNESCO World Heritage Program. Before we continue, talk about your understanding of world heritage

    • Cultural Heritage-1

      In this section, Dr. Rouran Zhang will introduce you cultural heritage criterion i to iii. You could achieve deep understanding of cultural heritage through several worldwide famous cases.

    • Cultural Heritage-2

      In this section, Dr. Rouran Zhang will introduce you cultural heritage criterion iv to vi. You could achieve deep understanding of cultural heritage through several worldwide famous cases.

    • Natural Heritage

      In this section, Dr. Rouran Zhang will introduce you the natural heritage features, geological and physiographical formations, and related criterions through several cases.

  • Week 2

    Mixed Heritage and Cultural Heritage Categories

    • Mixed Culture and Natural Heritage

      In this section, Dr. Rouran Zhang will introduce you mixed cultural and natural heritage operational guidelines related to the mixed heritage properties through several worldwide cases.

    • Authenticity, Integrity and Cultural Routes

      In this section, Dr. Rouran Zhang is going to talk about new concepts of Authenticity, Integrity and Cultural Routes. Can you present the connections and differences between the three concepts

    • Special Heritage and Sustainable

      In this section, Dr. Rouran Zhang will introduce you special heritage. Meanwhile, you will understand more connection between heritage and tourism by learning UNESCO world heritage and sustainable tourism program.

  • Week 3

    Heritage System: Managing and Safeguarding World Heritage Sites

    • The Australia’s Heritage System and Sydney Opera House

      In this section, Dr. Steve Brown will introduce Australia's heritage system and Sydney Opera House. Also, you will have a good understanding of the system of managing and safeguarding World Heritage Sites.

    • Role of the ISCCL and Cultural Landscape (1)

      In this section, we will talk about ISCCL, the international scientific committee on cultural landscapes, a little bit about its roles and responsibilities, and study a cultural landscape case, Honghe Hani Rice Terraces.

    • Role of the ISCCL and Cultural Landscape (2)

      In this section, Dr. Rouran Zhang will introduce cultural landscape to you. By studying, you will learn about the world famous case of West Lake and the wisdom of China in the protection of World Heritage.

    • Rural Landscapes as Heritage

      This activity is related to the last one, which is around the idea of rural landscapes and particular the doctrine text adopted by ISCCL. Doctrine texts are important. However, to be effective, they must be updated regularly.

    • Case Study: Mongolian Altai

      This activity is about integration of nature and culture in heritage management. Steve Brown will use the example of a World Heritage listed working integration in the Mongolian Altai discuss the issue.

  • Week 4

    Cultural Landscapes: Meanings, Values, Assessment, Documentation

    • Introduction of the Meaning of 'landscape’

      In the first section, Professor Ken Taylor will briefly introduce the meaning of cultural landscape. After completing this part of the study, I hope you can use your own words to describe the meaning of the cultural landscape.

    • Landscape Values

      To understand cultural landscape, you must know the value of cultural landscape. In this section, you will learn the value of cultural landscape under the guidance of Professor Ken Taylor.

    • Reading the Landscape: Identification and Assessment

      In this section, let's follow Professor Ken Taylor to learn how to read the cultural landscape, including identification and assessment. Specifically, you will learn planning model for heritage conservation management policy and

    • Case Study: Wingecarribee Historic Landscape

      In this section, Professor Ken Taylor will take Wingecarribee Historic Landscape as an example to introduce the value and protection strategy of cultural landscape.

  • Week 5

    Sustainable Indigenous Tourism

    • Indigenous Tourism

      In this section, you will learn about the development background and related documents of indigenous tourism in the world. Do you have any experience in indigenous tourism? If so, please share it with us in the discussion area.

    • Case Study and Conclusion: Great Expectations for Tourism

      In this section, there will be a case study of World Heritage Site Pimachiowin Aki and show your conclusions. Educator shows a great concern about the future development of the indigenous World Heritage Sites in Canada.

  • Week 6

    Affect and Emotion in Heritage Tourism

    • The Definition of Heritage in Heritage Performance Study

      In this section, you will know what heritage is and why people go to heritage sites. As we all know, heritage is a cultural tool used to remember and remake the history and the past.

    • Heritage Performance - Evidence from Australia, England and USA

      In this section, you will have a better understanding of some types of heritage performances involving over 4,500 visitors’ interviews from different museums and heritage sites in Australia, England and the United States.

    • The Conclusion of Heritage Performance

      In this section, you will know that heritage performance is emotional aspect of choices that tourists interact with heritage.
